For now, I thought it would be helpful to highlight the promotional statements on the cover. Kevin DeYoung, Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology here in Charlotte and Senior Pastor of Christ Covenant Church, gave an overview of why seminaries matter and why he loves teaching at RTS Charlotte in particular. On the one hand, I want to discourage students from pursuing the Ph.D./professor route. For this reason, RTS Charlotte is launching a new a weekly video series where I address some of the most potent attacks on the Christian faith. And thus they are subject to abuse and misuse. Since Ph.D. students have been immersed in academic circles for a number of years, they tend to answer these questions in the same manner they would deal with scholarly debates. According to Satlow, the Bible was not originally holy. Also, what Tarico fail’s to understand is that the disagreement amongst scholars is not necessarily due to problematic sources. There are a lot of opinions out there, from art historians to lay folks, about the identity of this mysterious woman. And once we do that, then our churches—which have been bleeding members for years—will finally grow again. Makes sure to check it out! If a church is going to be the key instrument in spreading the gospel, then it must implement the key means that God has ordained to accomplish that task: preaching. This doesn’t mean all seminary professors have to be ordained pastors (though that is ideal). Given Tomas’ own good work on canon, I was grateful for what was a very positive review. We are reminded that Moses was motivated by rewards, “He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward” (Heb 11:26). Warfield’s work still stands out today as one of the most cogent, insightful, and helpful works on the authority of Scripture. Of course, I recognize that there are also seminary husbands, but there is a unique challenge for seminary wives as they sometimes struggle to find their own calling in the midst of their husband’s pursuit of ministry. The stacks of books were a symbol of the creative intellectual potential God has given each of us. As we shall see, Paul didn’t simply believe Jesus was God in some marginal, semi-divine sort of way. This point has been eloquently made by Nicholas Kristoff in a recent New York Times Op-Ed piece aptly entitled, “A Confession of Liberal Intolerance.”  He writes: WE progressives believe in diversity, and we want women, blacks, Latinos, gays and Muslims at the table — er, so long as they aren’t conservatives. While this document’s status as a forgery is relatively certain, what has been uncertain (until now) is the identity of the forger. The abortion movement is not pro-child, but pro-self. It goes without saying that there has been a lot of chatter lately about the applicability of the Old Testament for new covenant believers. I can’t tell you how many times people have approached me over the years and expressed a desire to dive deeper into God’s word, or to explore church history, or to understand Reformed theology, or to learn how to defend the faith. From the time of the third century, and especially in the fourth and fifth centuries, Christians began to create these little “pocket Bibles” that contained portions of Scripture and sometimes even held multiple scriptural books (e.g., see my analysis of P.Ant. Young even covers a number of alleged contradictions and offers helpful solutions. It is on the written word of God that the church should stand. When it comes to global warming, they are not. 13. Congratulations to Dr. DeYoung! For example, when it comes to Justin Martyr, he argues that the Gospels “play a relatively minor role for him” and “didn’t play much of a role in the lives of most ordinary Christians” (p. 250). As one can see from the list above, all 27 books of the New Testament are accounted for (Origen clearly counts Hebrews as part of Paul’s letters). Thanks for your patience as we work out the kinks. My move was motivated in part by the great history of the divinity faculty at New College, but primarily by the desire to study with one particular scholar, Larry Hurtado.
